The proposed activity will be aimed at developing hands-on experience in the integration and evaluation of Radiofrequency-based assemblies as member of the System Engineering team of Elettronica GmbH.
Elettronica GmbH is developing an outdoor test range for his Customer, which is capable of simulating and generating complex electro-magnetic scenarios that reproduce the expected conditions in military theaters. Thousands of signals will be generated per second along the simulation time by Elettronica GmbH assets, and then routed or transmitted to real Electronic Warfare capabilities, which might be integrated on board a fighter or a vessel. Goal is to train the operators of such capabilities against realistic scenarios.
In the above-mentioned time period, the radio-frequency stage of the transmitting chain will be integrated, tested, and qualified according to military standards. To this aim laboratory activities and outdoor measurement campaigns are planned. Outdoor activities will include:
The RF stage is composed by several antennae, power amplifiers, filters and RF electronics, switch matrices and it functionally connects the sources (signal generators and Digital Radio Frequency Memories) to the antennae.

The proposed activity will be aimed at developing hands-on experience in the design and production of electronic chassis and enclosures for outdoor use, in strict collaboration with the engineering team of Elettronica GmbH.
Elettronica GmbH develops laboratory and outdoor electronic test solutions for his Customers. These generally consist of commercial off-the-shelf electronic units (signal generators, receivers, amplifiers) that are installed in a
mechanical enclosure (e.g., rack) and connected via cable to the system under test, and to an external data network.
The enclosures are fully sealed in order to guarantee operations in outdoor hostile conditions (temperature, rain,
humidity), and are often equipped with an internal (custom) air condition solution to guarantee that the indoor ambient meets the operational range of the electronic equipment. The design of the conditioning unit takes into
account the thermic dissipation, which is made particularly challenging by the presence of power amplifiers and powerful computing units/boards within the enclosure. A power management system is required in order to control
the overall operational conditions inside the unit.
Hardened connector-panels support the transmission of radio-frequency signals, data messages, and power from the internal devices to the external unit, as well as liquid exchange in case of liquid cooled devices. At the same time,
they guarantee easy mounting/dismounting operations by one technician in a limited time window.
Enclosures also guarantee high mobility of the system on (rough) terrain, and this turns into stringent limits for weight, volume, and handling operations. The use of composite material (carbon fiber) is often resorted to for the
weight advantages. On the other hand, the requirements on electromagnetic compatibility and interference (coming from the operational environment) need to be fulfilled. This is achieved in tight connection with the electrical
distribution network inside the enclosure.
The enclosure is finally qualified according to EU (safety, EC marking) and military (MIL-STD-810) regulations, which define the tests to be carried out and the values to be achieved in order to allow entry into the market.
